Discussion Assignment: In Support of Children and Families

You might have noticed common themes that connect all of the resources this week: Equity and social justice are possible. There are many different processes through which greater equity and social justice can be created. Supportive, caring relationships between children, between children and adults, and between adults, are instrumental elements of these processes.

This assignment provides the context for you to recall the power of your personal experiences with supportive people, as well as to consider ways in which you would like to connect with and/or contribute to equity and social justice in personally meaningful (i.e., authentic) ways.

In preparation for this assignment:

  • Review “Explore Social Justice Activism,” pages 28–29 in the course text, Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves
  • Recall an event from your childhood involving a challenge in which someone “stood up” for you or did not, and the effects of that support or lack of support
  • Review the questions on page 28, then:
    • Choose three that you would like to explore more deeply
    • Turn each into an action statement that demonstrates the ways in which a person might “stand up” for children and/or families

By Wednesday:

Post the following:

  • A synopsis of the event you recalled, including an evaluation of the effects of support/lack of support in your life
  • The three questions you chose paired with the action statements you developed
  • Three reasons why early childhood professionals should “stand up” for children, families, and colleagues with regard to bias, prejudice, or discrimination

Questions From Text:

  • Do I treat staff respectfully, recognizing and appreciating their unique cultural style and belief systems? Do I ask about openly talk about and appreciate the differences between us? Do I model open and respectful listening?
