Fiedler’s Contingency Model is an approach which analyzes the specifics of the situation and chooses a leadership style that would align well with it. Fiedler’s model requires assessment of a leadership style- task oriented or relationship oriented and matching it with the situation faced. Leadership style was measured using LPC scale (Least Preferred Co-Worker) which takes into account an individual’s relationship with a past coworker that he/she least enjoyed working with. As per the outlined model LPC scale along with the leader-member relationship and the position power of the leader would yield 1 out of 8 situations (Mind Tools, 2017). And then a leadership style would be chosen accordingly to effectively serve the situation.

“Interestingly enough, the score you get on the LPC score indicates something about you as a leader, not necessarily the person you were describing. High scores on the LPC mean that you are relationship oriented – you derive pleasure by building and maintaining relationships. Low LPC scores mean that you are task oriented – you derive pleasure from accomplishing tasks” (Anderson, 2016)

Fiedler’s model also had certain criticisms, one of it being that the model did not account for flexibility in a leadership style. Leadership style was gauged on an LPC score and this scoring technique was particularly biased for those that had extreme scores – High/Low LPC.

As far as an example, Disaster management would be one such situation/scenario where Fielder’s approach would be really efficient. The reason being the disaster hit area is lacking possible resources to come back to stability and would involve coordinating with multitude of affected people. So the task is unstructured. Introduction of an outside (disaster management authority) leader to carry out this work implies poor leader-member relations. And the leaders position power is weak too as a heavy handed leader won’t be accepted to lead the efforts. This gives us the most unfavorable scenario and the efficient leadership style for it would be Low LPC – task oriented approach.
